The comment and blog visitorship is a strange thing, a lot of it is timing, a lot of it is what one puts on there blog and a lot is how much one comments on others blogs.
It's very much like starting a business. How do you get word of mouth spreading? You can't tell customers to make sure and spread the word, that will just turn them off.
I was lucky to start early in the bloging process, so there was a small group who all knew each other, but there are thousands and thousands of blogs now, and everyone wants folks to stop by.
All I can say is you need to make contacts, not everyone will like your stuff, I get around 40 people a day stopping by and on average only one or two comment.
Think of your blog as networking through art, but don't be to pushy.
